About the speaker:

Xia Chen is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Beijing. She is a member（2020-2026）of the Executive Committee of the International Council of Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH)，Co-Chair of Scientific Panel, UNESCO Silk Roads Youth Research Grant, 2022-2023 Berggruen Fellow at the Berggruen Institute China Center (BICC). Her specialty is Chinese Philosophy and Religions, concentrating on Daoism. She is the author, editor, contributor and translator of several books and has contributed hundreds of articles to number of journals both in Chinese and English.

Abstract:

Next to Confucianism in China, the most important and influential native philosophic-spiritual tradition has been that of Daoism. As the oldest indigenous philosophic-spiritual tradition with a history over 2000 years, Daoism has had a great influence on various facets of the traditional Chinese culture and has been an inseparable part of it. Daoism is well-equipped to handle this sea change for an ecological civilization. It has conceptual resources for responding to the collision course with planetary boundaries, and for supplying the shifting conceptions of environmentalism with a coherent narrative.
